What are cryptocurrencies?

Cryptocurrencies are digital currencies with a cryptographically secured and decentralized payment system. In contrast to conventional money, such as Dollars or Euros, a cryptocurrency is only available in digital form. The technical implementation of digital currencies is based on so-called “blockchains”. Cryptocurrencies are seen as a new asset class and are therefore exposed to greater volatility than conventional money.
